1 CyreneTM is a bio-based solvent made from biomass, specifically woody wastes including sawdust. It was invented in a collaborative project involving the University of York Green Chemistry Centre (James Clark et al) and Circa (Tony Duncan et al). Its manufacture has been proven at multi-ton scale and its value has been demonstrated in many applications.
CyreneTM was designed to replace well established petro-solvents such as NMP and DMF which are now believed to be developmental toxins and for which many companies are seeking greener replacements. CyreneTM has similar physical properties to the amides but shows no developmental toxicity. The combination of its availability from bio-resources and its safety, make it a very attractive solvent for areas including the manufacturing of many organic chemicals including pharmaceutical intermediates, polymers and membranes as well as in analysis and cleaning.
Using CyreneTM does present challenges: it can have some colour and odour, it has a relatively high viscosity, it is fully miscible with water, it can decompose under some conditions.
